St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe

Rajmund Kolbe (1894–1941), Franciscan monk, was the founder of the Franciscan Monastery in Niepokalanów near Warsaw, and the missionary in Japan for many years. He died a martyr’s death in the Auschwitz death camp, volunteering in the stead of a fellow inmate sentenced to death. Canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II, he is remembered on August 14. The centre of his cult is located in Harmęże near Oświęcim.
